Choosing Olive Oil: What to Check First

Put grade, origin, date, packaging and use into the same checklist to reduce misjudgments based only on price and marketing words.

Choosing Olive Oil: What to Check First

When buying olive oil, the most eye-catching words are often not the most important information. Confirming the complete legal name first, and then looking at the origin, date, specifications, storage method and responsible party can eliminate many conceptual confusions. Then choose the flavour and size based on your raw food, cooking, catering or gifting needs.

Price can reflect part of the cost of fruit, harvesting, processing, yield, packaging and distribution, but it cannot alone prove quality. Low price does not necessarily mean failure, and high price cannot replace physical, chemical and sensory evidence. Traceable, well preserved and fit for practical use is a more reliable combination.

The first line looks at the level first

Names such as "extra virgin olive oil", "virgin olive oil" and "olive oil" correspond to different categories. Just seeing the word "olive" cannot mean it is the same product. Mixed, flavored infusions or complex flavoring products should also be understood by their actual names.

Acidity, if highlighted, should be read in conjunction with other specified indicators. Consumers cannot directly taste acidity with their taste buds, and a single low number cannot describe the origin, aroma, storage and overall quality.

The origin and date should be specific.

View information about where the olives were harvested, pressed or bottled, and who produced them, distinguishing between specific origins and broad origins. Geographical indications can show that the corresponding specifications are followed, but it still depends on the year and batch. If it is marked with the season it was harvested, it is often better to understand freshness than just looking at the filling date.

The shelf life is the quality period under the labelled storage conditions, which does not mean that the best aroma will always be maintained after opening the bottle. Before buying, check whether the shelf is exposed to the sun or close to a heat source. Once you get home, keep it away from light, sealed and stored at an appropriate temperature.

Packaging and capacity serve usage

Dark glass and metal containers can reduce light exposure, and oxygen-blocking designs such as bags and boxes may also help; transparent bottles are at higher risk if they are exposed to light for a long time. The appearance of packaging is not a grade, but it will affect the protection of oil products during circulation and use.

Families should choose the capacity based on consumption speed. For large catering packages, the frequency of opening, packaging hygiene and kitchen temperature should be considered. Buy cheap and use it too slowly, and eventually the flavour loss may negate the capacity advantage.

Quick review after arriving home

After opening the bottle, smell and taste by itself before using in food. Record whether the fruity aroma is clear, whether there is a balanced bitterness and pungency, and whether there is any stale or musty smell. If you suspect a product problem, you should retain the packaging, batch number, and proof of purchase, and contact the seller.

LuxurEat (露意膳)'s product selection instructions will try to provide verifiable information and clear uses, while avoiding taking "natural", "handmade" or awards as universal endorsements. The best choice is the one with a clear message, fresh condition, suitable style, and one that can be used up within a reasonable time.

Please check these before purchasing online

Check whether the product page displays the complete Chinese label, specifications, storage and responsible parties, rather than only the front renderings. After receiving the product, check whether the actual product is consistent with the page, and observe whether the packaging is leaking, dented, or experiencing abnormally high temperatures.

For imported food, transportation and warehousing are part of the quality chain. Traceable batches and clear after-sales support better long-term choices than unverifiable descriptions such as "same model from the manor" and "recommended by the master".
